LOS FLORIDANOS ANCESTORSS

NEW AUGUSTINE (WEST AUGUSTINE)
Submitted by Linda Barber

During the 2nd Spanish Period, West Augustine was called New Augustine. It was incorporated into the City of St. Augustine in 1922.

During the 1700 and 1800's, New Augustine was a thriving settlement that supported the transportation and trade industries. It was the direct link between Picolata, (where the shipping traffic stopped and unloaded) and St. Augustine. The stagecoach line had an office located there with many import/export companies.

When the British left Florida, New Augustine was divided into four Spanish Land Grants. The largest grant went to two Minorcan brothers, Francisco and Juan Triay. The smaller grants went to Felipe Solana, Henandez, and Huertes.

The Solana Grant consisted of 100 acres, south of Oyster Creek and was deeded to Felipe Solana in 1791 by Spanish Governor Juan Quesada. Felipe resided on the land with his family of eight and his eleven slaves. After his death the land was conveyed to his heir, Bartolo de Castro.

The property eventually became part of Seminole Park, a post 1930's development.

NOTE: We want to compile a list of properties owned by our families in the 1600, 1700 and 1800's. If you have any information that would help us, please send it to our P.O. Box or Email it.

We are always looking for articles for our newsletters. Send to P.O. Box or Email to website

Mail, Mail, and
More Mail !!

We are receiving three or four responses from our Website each month. I just thought you might like to see examples of what we get. This is an Email received this weekend.

Dear Ms. Brown,

I was very excited to find your webpage. I believe we met briefly a couple
of years ago at the St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library. I was
doing research there and Leslie Wilson introduced us. I believe you (and a
couple of other 1st family descendants) were in the planning stages for Los
Floridanos. Congratulations are in order as I see you've taken those plans
to fruition!!

My family lines also extend to the 1st Spanish Period in San Agustin. One of
my ancestors was the owner of the De Mesa-Sanchez house (43 St. George
St.) as well as the Rodriguez-Avero-Sanchez House (52 St. George St).

He was also a Sanchez, although he is not connected to the Sanchez-Ortigoza line. Another ancestor was a Dominguez de Viana who is connected to the Oldest House (14 St. Francis Street) as well as a Tovar de Garcia, who is connected to the Tovar House (22 St. Francis Street) that is also part of the Oldest house Museum complex. I also have a Miranda ancestor that owned various plots of land throughout San Agustin.

The Miranda line also joins the Solana line at one point. I have received a
Florida Pioneers Descendant Certificate for my Miranda ancestor from the
Florida State Genealogical Society and am in the process of applying for my
Dominguez de Viana and Sanchez ancestors.

I was born in Cuba and left for the U.S.United States at the age of 4. I was raised in Boston with all its history and have always loved history. Imagine my joy when I found my link to the oldest city about 4 years ago! I don't know if you're aware but trying to get genealogical documents from Cuba is just about impossible.

About a year and a half ago a group of us started a Cuban Genealogical Club to try to pool our resources and assist each other. May 18 & 19th we celebrated the 1st ever Cuban Genealogical Conference at the Coconut Grove Convention Center here in Miami. We had an excellent response and even had participants from Maryland, Ohio, New Jersey, and California. I mentioned St. Augustine during this conference because some of the surnames being mentioned I know I have seen in the St. Augustine Cathedral Parish Records. I will suggest to our webmaster, with your permission, a link to Los Floridanos. Our website is www.cgcmiami.org. Please feel free to check it out. I also wrote a brief article on my
experiences in St. Augustine.

I hope to hear from you in the near future.

Best Regards,
Martha Ibañez Zervoudakis
Director and Proud Founder of the Cuban Genealogy Club of Miami, Florida,
