CABBAGE
SWAMP AFFAIR
Submitted by Linda Barber
In 1825, Phillip Solano, a planter on the St. John's River, reported
to Colonel Gad Humphreys, the Indian Agent in St. Augustine, that
three Indians had appeared at his plantation and sworn revenge for
the disappearance of three warriors, who had been missing so long
they were assumed dead.Lieutenant
Canfield was dispatched with Solano and a detachment of twenty men
to ascertain the true facts. The Indians were encountered camped
at Cabbage Swamp. Solano refused to let the interpret hail the Indians
and explain their presence. The Indians saw Solano with the soldiers
in the background and took a belligerent stance. Solano's response
was to fire on the party. The Indians returned the volley and in
the skirmish, two Indians were captured - one was slightly wounded
- and the others fled. They left four rifles and a large quantity
of skins.The
Lieutenant finally took command of the situation and sent one of
the captured Indians to explain to his cohorts the reason for their
presence and that the whole thing was a misunderstanding. The Indians
were incensed and not very forgiving because of the wounding of
one of their warriors. The events, evidently scared a lot of the
settlers in the area causing them to flee to St. Augustine for fear
of reprisals. The Indian interpreter reported to Col Humpreys that
Solano took the items abandoned by the Indians back to his plantation.Col.
Humpreys investigated the incident and was puzzled by three issues;
Solano's original claims of being threatened, the interpreter not
being allowed at the beginning to explain their purpose to the Indians,
and the fact that Solano went home with booty.Because
of the unrest in the countryside due to this incident, Humpreys
had to send an infantry detachment to patrol the road between Fort
Brooke and Camp King. The government also had to make reparations
to the injured warrior to prevent further bloodshed. Though he tried,
Humpreys couldn't obtain censure against Solano. The
ironic part to the story is that after the whole event was over,
the missing warriors returned. The

SPREADING
THE WORD
|
We have
an on-going battle educating the country about our heritage and
the true history of the state of Florida and the part St. Augustine
played in the building of the nation. I am always amazed how Anglized
our history is portrayed in the American history textbooks our students
are provided in school. A good deal of space is given to the establishment
of the New England area and the life of the Pilgrims. The publishers
of text books seem to ignore or de-emphasize the many contributions
to our country's development that were made by cultures other than
English. We know about St. Augustine's history, but do most people
in this country realize that we were an established city with surrounding
farms, when the English arrived in Jamestown to establish a continuing
presence in Jamestown, Virginia? We need to get the word out and
that is what I'm asking you to help us do. Susan Hugas is in the
process of sending a letter to the History Channel on a program
they presented recently. She is sharing information about Florida's
contribution to the development of this country. When the letter
is in it's final format I will share it with everyone. Thanks, Susan.
