In March we will
maintain a LOS FLORIDANOS booth at the Menorcan Heritage Festival
and help serve food. I think everyone who participates will enjoy
the day.
We will set up
a LOS FLORIDANOS table featuring historical information and memorabilia,
old agricultural items, and native culinary items. We need donated
items from our members to sell at our display table.
The theme of
the display will be items representing Old Florida's environmental
flavor, such as; fig preserves, orange marmalade, candied orange
peel, cane syrup, quava preserves, muscadine jelly, komquat preserves,
pear preserves and relish, hog plum jelly, datil pepper sauce,
pickles, etc. I think you can see the theme from these items.
We also could sell any native plants (fruit, vegetable, flowering,
mosses, ferns, etc.) |
Please keep this
in mind during the coming months. I know we have fantastic cooks
and accomplished gardeners in our membership and would appreciate
any contribution you could make to the effort. We don't need
large quantities, just a few jars or plants from each member.
You may possibly
think of other Native Florida items you would like to contribute
so feel free.
We will also be serving sour orangeade as samples and could use
someone to donate small bathroom size cups and sugar. We served
approximately 5 gallons of samples last year and ran out.
Another aspect
of our display will feature historical facts and display old
artifacts of Florida. If you have anything we could borrow, let
us know. Anybody have a gopher pole ???
Even if you don't
have any items to contribute, we want to encourage you to help
staff the table and help serve food. It's a great way to meet
everyone, develop close family ties, and promote our legacy.
We always have a great time at these events.
As you can see
we are a bit ambitious but our saying is "DREAM BIG, PLAN
RATIONALLY". I'm still having problems convincing family
members to form a posse to ride in the Easter Parade. I guess
I'll have to settle for another idea. Got any ????? |
Our BIG EVENTS
this
year will include:
Menendez
Birthday
Celebration (Feb)
Menorcan Festival (Mar)
Easter Parade (Apr)
St. Augustine's Birthday
and Founding (Sept). |
Our November meeting is
scheduled for November 4, 2000 at 10:30 am . We will meet as
usual at Oscar's Old Florida Grill. Hope everyone will stay and
enjoy a wonderful lunch with exciting conversation.
Fellow member Tommy Rogero has just returned from Spain and we
are looking forward to hearing about his activities and adventures.
We will also share information about our meeting with Dr. Lyons
concerning early Florida history and our families' roles.
